Spring at Bellingrath Gardens showcases a variety of spectacular blooms, but especially azaleas.
Over seventy-five years ago, Walter and Bessie Bellingrath embarked on creating one of the nations’s most loved and treasured gardens. Prominent Mobile architect, George B. Rogers, designed the couple a 65 acre garden estate in the late 1920’s. Since that time millions of visitors and guests worldwide have enjoyed year-round continuous blooms, toured the originally-furnished Bellingrath Home and cruised along the Fowl River aboard the Southern Belle River Cruiser.
The original gardens were patterned after the grand gardens of Italy, France, and England by Walter D. Bellingrath, a pioneer in the Coca-Cola bottling industry. The Asian garden melds cultural concepts of landscape art.
The brick and wrought-iron mansion contains Bessie Morse Bellingrath’s collection of furniture; Dresden,
Meissen, Royal Dalton and Sevres porcelain; china; crystal; sterling silver; and Oriental rugs.
The Delchamps Gallery of Boehm Porcelain, in the center of the gardens, houses one of the largest public
exhibits of Boehm porcelain in existence.
