Visit the birthplace of Western civilization
Day 1, Mon., Oct. 9 – Depart Baton Rouge (or other home airports), for overnight flight to Rome.
Day 2, Tues., Oct. 10 - Rome – Morning arrival in Rome and begin our sightseeing. Visit the Roman Forum and the famous Colosseum.
Day 3, Wed., Oct. 11 - Rome – A full day of guided sightseeing. We visit the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, world famous for Michelangelo’s ceiling paintings and The Last Judgement. We then visit St. Peter’s Basilica and Square. We visit the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain.
Day 4, Thurs., Oct. 12 - Sorrento – This morning we motorcoach south to tour Pompeii, the ancient city buried by hot cinders and Ash from Mt. Vesuvius in A.D. 79. Then we take the winding Amalfi Coast, one of the world’s most spectacular scenic coastal drives, passing colorful Positano. Two nights in Sorrento.
Day 5, Fri., Oct. 13 – Sorrento – Isle of Capri – Morning sail to the beautiful Isle of Capri in the Bay of Naples and where Emperor Tiberius spent his retirement. See the highlights. Late afternoon we return to the mainland and romantic Sorrento.
Day 6, Sat., Oct. 14 – Taormina, Sicily – Today we motorcoach through southern Italy to Sicily and it beautiful seaside resort of Taormina. Sicily is the largest of the Mediterranean islands and is generally mountainous. It is an island of dramatic beauty whose strategic importance has placed it at the center of some of the richest civilizations of the Western world. Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans, Saracens, Normans and Spaniards have all contributed to the island’s rich artistic heritage chronicled by splendid palaces and elegant temples.
Day 7, Sun., Oct. 15 – Taormina – A free morning. Afternoon sightseeing of Taormina. This city is perched high above the blue Ionian Sea at the foot of majestic Mt. Etna and provides one of the world’s most beautiful vistas.
Day 8, Mon., Oct. 16 – Cefalu – Palermo – Morning drive through the center of Sicily. Stop in Savoca, the village used for the filming of the Godfather. To the seaside town of Cefalu, home to one of the most magnificent cathedrals in Sicily. Through its medieval streets. On to the capital, Palermo.
Day 9, Tues., Oct. 17 - Palermo – Our city tour will show us the fascinating blend of Arab and Norman influences in the Palace of the Normans and the church of St. John of the Hermits. See Monreale Monastery built by William II in the 12th century.
Day 10, Wed., Oct. 18 – Agrigento – This morning we bus across Sicily to Agrigento where we tour the Greek ruins in the Valley of the Temples. They remain stunning in their effect, reflecting the wealth and luxury of this ancient town. Of the ten temples built in late 6C – late 5C B.C., parts of nine are still visible.
Day 11, Thurs., Oct. 19 – Malta – Morning flight from Sicily to the nearby island of Malta, often called the keystone of the Mediterranean. We are here for 2 nights. We explore the Baroque elegance of Valletta, Malta’s capital, and the medieval walled city of Mdina for a taste of Malta’s historic grandeur.
Day 12, Fri., Oct. 20 – Malta – Explore the megalithic temples of Malta, which are among the oldest freestanding structures in the world. Drive along the gorgeous coast line to the Red Tower, a stronghold for the Knights of St. John. We enjoy the island of Goza and visit the 5,500 year old Ggantija Temples, among the world’s oldest religious buildings.
Day 13, Sat., Oct. 21 – Today we fly home, arriving the same day.
