Day 1, Tues., Oct. 24 - Waco – Early morning departure from Zachary thru Baton Rouge, Lafayette, DeRidder (cars may be left here), Jasper, Huntsville. We spend 2 nights in Waco, named for an Indian tribe located here. Waco is located on the Brazos River, the longest river in Texas, population 150,000. With a scenic river walk, it’s a bustling trade center in central Texas. Waco is enjoying notoriety tied to the popularity of HGTV’s hit show “Fixer Upper” and its stars, Chip & Joanna Gaines, who are building a decorating empire.
Day 2, Wed., Oct. 25 - Waco – This morning we travel the “Magnolia Trail” including shopping at Magnolia Market at the Silos, checking out the gardens and, weather permitting, lunch on your own at one of the numerous food trucks at the market, offering a variety of choices. This afternoon we visit the Dr. Pepper Museum, with historic memorabilia and displays. Dr. Pepper originated at the Morrison’s Old Corner Drug Store in Waco. Then on to the Texas Ranger’s Hall of Fame & Museum, containing artifacts and firearms, where we view a film on the history of the rangers. The Texas Rangers date from the early days of Texas (1823).
Day 3, Thurs., Oct. 26 – Huntsville – This morning we enjoy a brief driving tour of Baylor University, the world’s largest Baptist University. Stop in Hearne, Texas for lunch on your own and then continue south to Bryan /College Station, twin cities with a population of 200,000 and home to Texas A&M University. The university is the oldest public institution of higher learning in Texas and the nation’s 6th largest.
This afternoon we visit the George H.W. Bush Museum & Library, located on the campus and home to some 90,000 exhibitions and memorabilia, including a section of the Berlin Wall, a WWII Avenger torpedo bomb, a 1949 Studebaker, replicas of Bush’s Oval Office and Camp David Office and a section devoted to the First Lady, Barbara Bush. We enjoy a riding tour of the A &M campus. A short drive toward home takes us to Huntsville for overnight.
Day 4, Fri., Oct. 27 – After breakfast we continue our journey through Texas and Louisiana with afternoon arrival home.
